Chazz Witherspoon learns a valuable lesson in loss.
By Mike Cassell The Philadelphia Boxing Report 6/26/08
You know the old saying, “If you listen to the crowd, you will be sitting with them.” Undefeated heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon 23 -1 15KO’s has been inundated with press and fan banter throughout his four year professional career, that he doesn’t display the “killer instinct” in the ring. Most times Witherspoon just shrugs it off and usually counters with a cerebral response that would temporarily quiet his critics. Winning 75% of his victories by knockout didn’t seem to be enough for most commentators when Witherspoon got a shot on Television. Whether it was ESPN or HBO all the commentators seemed to carry the same opinion about Witherspoon. Yes he is winning, but he isn’t aggressive or doesn’t display the “killer instinct”. It is easy make those statements, because the heavyweight division is in such dismay, but at the end of the day, the writers and the talking heads aren’t walking away with a loss. Witherspoon always had a methodical way of wearing down his opponent. He got the knockouts when he was supposed to get them. Not through aggressiveness, or displaying the “killer instinct” but through patience, and smart boxing. He got his wins by being crafty and waiting for his opening. He didn’t need to create one prematurely or artificially.
On Saturday June 21st, Witherspoon faced unbeaten Chris Arreola 24 – 0 21 KO’s. Arreola is a banger. He is not the greatest ring tactician, he just punches very hard and very often and he is good at it. But that predictability should have given Witherspoon a tremendous advantage; instead he seemed to fight Arreola’s fight from the sound of the bell. Having seen most of Witherspoon’s fights, even calling the blow by blow on television for 2 of them, I noticed this was not the same fighter I came to know. He started much faster than usual. He wasn’t testing the power of Arreola, he seemed to be standing and eating it, purposely. He was trying to send a message and that message was, he could take it. Big hitters sell tickets, but sooner or later they are always exposed. When Mike Tyson exploded onto the scene in the mid 80’s, he was knocking out most of his competition. He seemed too strong and too fast for everyone. The reality for Tyson was that it was only matter of time before he was exposed. A banger carries a reputation that makes his opponents take chances. It’s a pride thing. The world was shocked when Buster Douglas destroyed Mike Tyson, but early on in that fight when Buster was fighting Tyson’s fight, and he got floored. When Douglas used his brilliant jab, and chopped the body to take away the power, Tyson’s boxing skills, or lack thereof, were exposed to every fighter in the heavyweight division, including Evander Holyfield.
Although Holyfield has done a lot to tarnish his accomplishments lately, 13 years ago he was absolutely spectacular. He was a fabulous boxier, but the knock against him was, he was not a “real” heavyweight. He didn’t have that, dare I say it “killer instinct”. He wasn’t really respected until he went toe to toe with Riddick Bowe and many others. Then he became “The Warrior”. It is very telling that he couldn’t receive the accolades he so fully deserved for the talents he had. He needed to reinvent himself and to be considered a warrior. But truth be told, Evander Holyfield was a 6 time champion because of his boxing skills and ring proficiency. He was just a very smart fighter. Witherspoon is a smart fighter too, who may have been listening to the audience a bit too much. After the fight he said, “I let my pride get the best of me, I fought his fight.” The disappointment was glaring through his somber expression. Witherspoon is an astute student and graduate of St. Josephs University. He studies and learns his lessons well. Some just cost more than others and this one could be very costly. Soon he will join the very audience who criticized his style, watching his competition move forward, while serving his mandatory suspension. Lesson learned.

The great Cotto denial
By Mike Cassell 5/10/2008
It is becoming embarrassing and a bit demeaning to the boxing public when we are forced to listen to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya pontificate about the talent of Miguel Cotto. Last month on ESPN, Mayweather actually sat and asked Brian Kenney, “What has he (Cotto) done?” Who has he fought? Sadly Kenney allowed that ridiculous statement to fly unwarranted as Floyd plugged his upcoming acting role on the WWE. Mayweather Jr also used the excuse that he and Bob Arum (Cotto’s promoter) do not get along, and hinted that if Cotto obtained another promoter he might consider a fight. Now that’s funny, considering Bob Arum promoted Mayweather in 35 of his fights. I can see how hard it would be to do one more for 8 to 10 million. Mayweather doesn’t seem to think Cotto puts meat in the seats. Maybe he ought to get on a plane and travel to Atlantic City sometime.
Cotto can bring a big crowd and a Mayweather match-up would break box office records. I guess Mayweather forgets that before he fought Arturo Gatti and De La Hoya, he could barely fill an arena. Or maybe he forgets being booed out the ring against Carlos Baldomir, or the teary and whiney goodbye that followed at the post fight press conference as he quit boxing. With all his talent and all his ability, he doesn’t have the common sense to buy a DVR and actually watch and listen to some of the crap that he says and does on Television. Any person with a half a brain can see that he is afraid of Miguel Cotto. Fans know it, Cotto knows it, and most importantly, Mayweather himself knows it, and it shows. His biggest fights were made possible by his competition. If De La Hoya had the attitude of Mayweather, he could have dodged Floyd permanently.
Oscar De La Hoya, who has never showed any fear of anybody, actually convinced himself that fighting a Puerto Rican fighter would somehow be disrespectful to his wife who is of Puerto Rican dissent. Now that’s really funny! I guess all those phone calls and plane rides to convince Felix Trinidad to get back in the ring was done undercover. Cotto should be incensed and insulted by such treatment, but he just smiles; because he knows what Mayweather and De La Hoya are already aware of. Miguel Cotto is the only one of the three that will fight anyone. He doesn’t care where you come from, who you’re married to, or how many fans you bring. If you think you’re the best and you can fight, Cotto will fight you. His middle name isn’t “money”.
What made Oscar De La Hoya great in the past, was that he never ran from a fight. He had the guts to face Mosely, Trinidad, and Quartey without blinking and putting up in every one of those fights. A match with Mayweather is easy because Oscar understands that win or lose, neither one is taking a big risk. The question is, does anybody care about a rematch except their accountants? Cotto has been a world champion since 2003. He has beaten Shane Mosely the man De La Hoya couldn’t beat. He beat down Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana, Paulie Malignaggi, and to add insult to injury, he is going to fight the man Floyd Mayweather has been ducking for the past 3 years, Antonio Margarito.
Miguel Cotto has cracks; there is no doubt about it. He can be knocked down. He can be hurt, but that is what makes exciting championship boxing and that is what separates him from the rest. He is not afraid. He is not worried about the looks of a match; he is not worried at all. He is a confident, violent fighter who believes that he can hurt anyone. He can adapt his style to outbox the boxer, and there isn’t a puncher alive south of the middleweight division that can stand toe to toe with him. These qualities are as bold and obvious as the scores of denials coming from both Mayweather and De La Hoya. Real legacy is defined by the mountains you climb, and challenges you take.
