Since 1977, some of the strongest men on the planet have gathered to lift unfathomably heavy objects for a simple, singular purpose: Find out who is the World’s Strongest Man. This year, 30 contestants will meet and compete in Myrtle Beach, SC, from May 1-5. The 2024 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) contest is not streamed live, so your best bet is to tune into BarBend’s leaderboard, which we’ll update after each event.

BarBend’s boots-on-the-ground correspondent Roger Lockridge will bring you event recaps, breaking news, and analyses directly from Myrtle Beach. You can also tune into the World’s Strongest Man’s Instagram for clips of the action.

To watch the full event, you’ll have to wait for coverage in the US to air on CBS and CBS Sports later in the summer; UK residents won’t be able to watch the event until the end of the year.

WSM Highlights

  • The 2024 WSM groups have been revealed. Promoter Colin Bryce said they announced the groups late due to the pre-event drop-outs. They want to ensure fair group match-ups heading into tomorrow. Bryce said: “All that matters is [the athletes] get the information on the events as early as possible. And we’ve done that.”
  • You cannot watch World’s Strongest Man live. Your best bet for results is to keep tuning into our leaderboard, which we update after each event.
  • This will be Rob Kearney’s last time competing in World’s Strongest Man. On April 25th, the American announced he was retiring from competitive strongman.

FAQs

How can I watch the 2024 World’s Strongest Man?

You can’t watch it live. World’s Strongest Man is made for TV. The entire competition will air on the CBS Sports Network in the U.S. beginning on May 28, 2023. In the U.K., the contest will air on Channel 5 in December.

Who won the World’s Strongest Man last year?

Mitchell Hooper of Canada won last year’s World’s Strongest Man.
Other past winners competing in the 2024 WSM include Tom Stoltman of Scotland. “The Albatross” won the contest in 2021 and 2022.

How is strongman scored?

First place can earn as many points as there are competitors. In the Qualifying stage, you can earn a maximum of six points (since six athletes are in each group). First place gets six points; second gets five, and so on. In the Finals, where there will be 10 competitors in total, first place gets 10 points; second gets nine; third gets eight, and so on.

In the event of a tie, points are split. If two athletes tie for second, you would add up the second and third-place points and divide by two. So, in the WSM Finals, two athletes who tie for second earn 8.5 points each (nine plus eight divided by two).

Classic Physique Winner — Shicheng Jin

This is no surprise to many fans because Shicheng Jin has been on the Olympia stage before. He tied for 16th in the 2023 Classic Physique Olympia.

This is Shicheng Jin’s second pro win, following his victory at the 2023 Tokyo Pro. As a result, his ticket to the 2024 Classic Physique Olympia stage is secured.

Lei Yingqi and Kai Liu took second and third places, respectively. Hao Jiang earned his pro card in the amateur show and jumped into his first pro show immediately to a sixth-place finish.

Bikini Division Winner — Chaoxian Chen

Imagine entering an amateur contest and leaving the event with a Bikini Olympia qualification. That is exactly what Chaoxian Chen did.

Not only did Chaoxian Chen earn pro status and make her IFBB Pro League debut, but she also pulled off the upset and won the title. The victory was decisive, as evidenced by straight first-place votes on the scorecards. She is qualified to grace the biggest stage in her division.

Men’s Physique Winner — George Brown

George Brown has over a decade of pro experience and had eight career pro wins before this contest. Number nine came convincingly, as he scored all first-place votes from the judges.

Brown was coming off a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Charlotte Pro. He bounded to the top of the podium in St. Louis to secure his ninth Olympia appearance. Brown’s most recent Olympia appearance was in 2022, when he ranked outside the top 15.

Silver and bronze were claimed by Dustin Alvis and Hossein Karimi, respectively. Both athletes will have to compete again and win to qualify for the 2024 Olympia. They have until the cutoff date of Sept. 24, 2024.

Women’s Physique Winner — Marika Jones

Marika Jones tried to win five different shows to qualify for the 2023 Women’s Physique Olympia but came up short. It only took her one attempt in 2024 to get the job done.

This is Jones’ first pro win and Olympia qualification. She is the eighth competitor to join the 2024 Olympia roster in her division, which includes three-time defending champion Sarah Villegas and 2022 winner Natalia Abraham Coelho

Next Chance

Natalie Rae Wolfe ranked as the runner-up in the Women’s Physique division; Virginia Macon settled for third. As with the male athletes, Rae, Macon, and the rest of the roster will have to compete in a future pro show during the 2024 season to qualify for the 2024 Olympia. Their next opportunity is the next Women’s Physique featured in the 2024 Pittsburgh Pro on May 10-11, 2024, in Pittsburgh, PA.

Winner — Yoon Sung Lee

The pre-judging round was the only round held at this show. Lee won it with a perfect score. Lee ranked third at this event in 2023 but scored the gold in 2024 to qualify for the 2024 Olympia for the second straight year. Should he compete at the Men’s Physique Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, on Oct. 10-13, 2024, he will hope to break into the top 15 for the first time.

Second Place — Jinbo Li

The 2022 Japan Pro champion hoped to secure his second pro win, but it was not meant to be. The judges had Jinbo Li in second place unanimously.

The good news for Jinbo Li is that he has until Sept. 15, 2024, to win a pro show to fulfill his Olympia aspirations. Only pro show winners advance to the 2024 Olympia.

Third Place — Gantulga Altankhuyag

Altankhuyag ranked second in this show in 2023, which was the only pro show he had entered before as a pro competitor, according to NPC News Online. The Mongolian bodybuilder received unanimous third-place votes on the scorecards. Should he continue competing in Asia, his next opportunity will come at the 2024 Thailand Pro on June 1, 2024, in Pattaya, Thailand.

Other Notes

This was one of three pro Men’s Physique shows held on this particular weekend. Aundre Benson had won the 2024 Los Angeles Grand Prix Pro, and the champion of the St. Louis Pro was George Brown.

Winner — Ashley Kaltwasser

Kaltwasser’s 44th victory came against a lineup of heavy-hitters. However, there was no doubt in the judges’ eyes who the winner was. This was Kaltwassers’ first appearance onstage since the 2023 Japan Pro.

Kaltwasser took time off to recover from eye surgery but returned with a vengeance. She was already qualified for the 2024 Bikini Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, as a past champion, a top-three finisher at the 2023 Olympia, and the previous season’s winner, so no qualification was awarded at this contest.

Second Place — Marie-Eve Duchesneau

The Canadian competitor now has three top-three finishes to her credit. Duchesneau previously placed third at the 2024 Bikini International UK and second at the 2024 Klash Series Championship Pro. She has until Sept. 15, 2024, to win a show and qualify for the Olympia.

Third Place — Chantel Hall

Hall ranked seventh at the 2024 Wasatch Warrior Pro show in Salt Lake City, UT. She’s made significant improvements since then, which paid off in her first pro podium. This was Hall’s second pro show of the 2024 season. She is in her fifth pro season, still seeking her first pro win and Olympia qualification.

Winner — Aundre Benson

Benson was coming off a third-place finish at the 2024 Wasatch Warrior Pro event in Salt Lake City, UT. He rebounded for his second career victory by a single point. It was his first win since the 2019 Sacramento Pro show.

Thanks to this win, Benson earned qualification to compete at the 2024 Olympia Weekend in Las Vegas, NV, on Oct. 10-13, 2024. Benson can wait to step onstage until the Olympia or keep competing to block other athletes from qualifying. Only pro show winners qualify for the Olympia in the 2024 season.

Second Place — Phillippe Degila

This was Degila’s second show of the 2024 season. He previously finished sixth at the 2024 Wasatch Warrior Pro. This is his third runner-up finish in his pro career, and it was by the closest margin possible.

Degila had two second-place finishes in 2023 but never won an event. The fifth-year pro must win a pro show by Sept. 15, 2024, to qualify for the Olympia in Las Vegas.

Third Place — Jeremy Coleman

Coleman is trying to qualify for the Olympia for the first time since 2016. This is his second show of the 2024 season, but he came up short on the scorecards, though the bronze is a respectable finish.

The judges had Coleman ranked three points higher than fourth-place finisher Austin Witty. There is no official word on whether Coleman will continue to compete this season or what his next show will be if he does.

Strongwoman Faye Pittman made strongwoman history by breaking the under 73-kilogram (U73KG) class world record in the Axle Press, lifting 105 kilograms (231 pounds). The historic lift was made at the inaugural edition of the Official Strongman Record Breakers event in Derry, Ireland, on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

The Axle Press is performed with a barbell thicker than a traditional weightlifting bar, making it more challenging to grip. This was Pittman’s first career world record. Her attempt can be seen below, courtesy of the Official Strongman Instagram page:

Pittman lifted the Axle bar from the floor to her weight belt — legal in competitive strongman and strongwoman. She transferred the bar swiftly to her front rack position before prepping to split jerk the bar overhead.

Pittman stood tall with the arms locked out and smiling as the official gave the down command. Fireworks went off once she dropped the weight and walked off the stage to celebrate. Aside from her lifting belt, Pittman also wore knee sleeves and wrist wraps during her attempt.

According to Official Strongman, Pittman weighed in at 72.6 kilograms (160 pounds). Per Kaos Strength, the previous record stood at 101 kilograms (222.7 pounds) set by Rhianon Lovelace at Kaos Gym in January 2023.

Pittman is the 2024 Wales Strongest Woman champion. She is set to compete next at the 2024 Britain’s Strongest Woman contest at the Barbican Theatre in York, England, on Saturday, June 22, 2024. She also trains and competes in Olympic lifting.

Pittman was the third strongwoman to break a world record 2024 Official Strongman Record Breakers. Sumer Johnson broke the U82 world deadlift record with a 300 kilograms (660 pounds) pull, and 2023 Masters Over 50 World’s Strongest Woman winner Claire Myler became the first Masters strongwoman to pull 300 kilograms.

The 2024 Official Strongman Record Breakers was streamed live on the Official Strongman website. Paid subscribers can watch the replay of the full event on the Official Strongman website.

Claire Myler made strongwoman history as the first Masters woman to deadlift 300 kilograms (660 pounds). Myler traveled to Derry, Ireland, for the inaugural Official Strongman Record Breakers event on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Myler claimed the Masters Over 40 and Masters Over 50 world records in the deadlift for her milestone 300-kilogram pull. Check out the record-breaking lift below, courtesy of the Official Strongman Instagram page:

Myler wore a lifting belt, lifting straps, and a deadlift suit for her attempt. The crowd cheered for Myler as she quickly pulled the bar from the floor to her knees. However, a struggle ensued through the second half of the pull.

Once Myler secured the barbell to her thighs, she leaned and hitched it to her hips forward — a legal maneuver in strongman and strongwoman competition. Myler stood tall with the weight and waited for the down command. She returned the barbell to the floor and celebrated with the crowd and fellow deadlift world record holder Lucy Underdown.

Myler was the second strongwoman to pull the milestone 300-kilogram weight on the day. Sumer Johnson claimed the U82 world record with her own 300-kilogram lift.

Myler has been active in competitions in recent months. She was coming off a second-place finish at the 2024 Arnold Amateur Strongwoman competition in Columbus, OH, in March 2024. Additionally, she had a third-place finish at the 2023 Masters World’s Strongest Woman event — a part of the 2023 Official Strongman Games in Charleston, WV; she won the Masters Over 50 World’s Strongest Woman at the same event.

Myler is next set to compete at the 2024 Britain’s Strongest Woman contest at the Barbican Theatre in York, England, on June 22, 2024. The inaugural Official Strongman Record Breakers event was streamed live on the Official Strongman website. The full replay is available for paid subscribers on their website.

2023 Clash on the Coast Under 82-kilogram (U82) division winner Sumer Johnson is now the U82 strongwoman world-record holder in the deadlift. Johnson was a part of the 2024 Official Strongman Record Breakers event in Derry, Ireland, on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Johnson’s deadlift of 300 kilograms (660 pounds) was the first world record of the day. Check out the new world record below, courtesy of the Official Strongman Instagram page:

Johnson was at the barbell with her lifting straps secured. After some deep breaths, she began the pull and quickly reached lockout. She briefly looked around at the crowd before the official gave her the down command.

Once Johnson returned the barbell to the floor, blood streamed down her forehead as her excitement showed for claiming the record. Johnson used lifting straps, a weight belt and a deadlift suit. According to Kaos Strength, the previous U82KG deadlift record was 282.5 kilograms (622.9 pounds) by Rhianon Lovelace.

Sumer Johnson’s Competitive History

Johnson has competed in strongwoman and competitive powerlifting. Her previous strongwoman accolades include a fourth-place finish at the 2017 Arnold Amateur Strongwoman World Championships in Columbus, OH, and a fifth-place finish at the 2022 America’s Strongest Woman contest in Las Vegas, NV. In addition to a huge deadlift, Johnson is a solid presser, as evidenced by a career-best 122-kilogram (269-pound) log press.

According to Open Powerlifting, Johnson’s competition-best deadlift was her 250-kilogram pull on June 27, 2020, at the Southern Powerlifting Federation’s (SPF) Arkansas State Championships in Little Rock, AR. Unlike strongwoman, straps are not allowed in competitive raw powerlifting. Johnson has a top raw squat of 227 kilograms (501 pounds) and a 121-kilogram (266-pound) bench press to her credit.

This was the first edition Official Strongman Record Breakers event. The replay is available for paid subscribers at the Official Strongman website.

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated with new information. Sumer did, in fact, wear a deadlift suit during her pull.
